Better Means: Take What Is Yours

We see the exploitation, the systemic harm and constraints that bring suffering to coffee people.

Here and now, we can defend ourselves against the economic oppression of the coffee market. Against unfairly paid labor, the C-market, and prices below the cost of production. Against contracts written by the stronger party. Against debt as a tool of control — loans, leases, "aid" that creates dependency. Against monopolized access — to markets, to knowledge, to certification, to infrastructure. Against forced growth — scale or die. Against invisible costs — shifted onto the planet, onto the worker's body, onto future generations.

And against something more intimate: the shame of not earning enough in a system designed so that most people won't.

This self-defense operates on two levels: individual and collective. Let's talk about both.

You defend yourself. On your own terms, within your own capacity and skills. No one will take better care of you than you.

But if you need help, remember that in The Better Coffee we defend ourselves together — as a collective responsible for one another. It's a synergy of skills, knowledge, strength, and possibility. It shows up in mutual aid and the non-oppressive environment we build together. An alternative market, free from the price-matrix. Oriented toward cooperation, not competition.

Economic Self-Defense is also about protecting autonomy and equality. Dismantling hierarchy cuts off much of exploitation at its root.
