We do not want this text to sound like self-promotion. And yet, in a way, it is. What matters to us is that you — the reader — not only encounter the ethical perspective on working with coffee presented on the pages of Red Ink Coffee, but also have the opportunity to step into a living endeavour that aims to influence real change in the world of coffee.
thebettercoffee.org is a window into that world. It is the central site of the system — a place that organizes and complements the communication of The Better Coffee.
At its core is the The Standard section. There we have made publicly available, free of charge, a document of more than 110 pages describing the architecture of The Better Coffee. It is designed as a clear, book-magazine style file that works on any device. You can keep it with you at all times — on your phone or computer — and return to it in your daily work with coffee.
Over time, we will also publish around ten-page abstracts of The Standard in different languages to make it easier to read and navigate its ideas.
The Better Coffee Standard describes the values, the reasons for its creation, and the mechanisms and structures through which The Better Coffee operates. The website thebettercoffee.org reflects this structure in practice. There you will find, among other things:
The Better Coffee — a shared ethical orientation for people working with coffee. It is a way of thinking and acting that connects sensory quality with human dignity, cooperation, and responsibility toward the planet.
The Better Coffee Endeavour — a field of shared action for people and places working in alignment with The Better Coffee. You can become part of it through your own decisions and the way you practice coffee in everyday work.
The Places — places where the values of The Better Coffee begin to operate in the real economy: farms, roasteries, cafés, laboratories, and other initiatives connected with coffee.
The Ranking Method — a coffee evaluation method that combines sensory analysis with information about production practices and economic realities. Its aim is to increase transparency and responsibility throughout the coffee chain.
The Trainers — people who work with other coffee professionals through education, consultation, and presence in practice. Their role is to bring the language and values of The Better Coffee into real-world action.
The Curriculum — a set of ten equal courses that organize knowledge about coffee and place it within a broader social, economic, and environmental context.
On thebettercoffee.org you can enroll in available courses from The Curriculum. You can also organize them in your own place or region together with The Trainers.
A good starting point is The Better Coffee Blueprint — a 90-minute introductory course to the whole system. It helps explain its structures and the direction of change proposed by The Better Coffee.
Through the website you can also purchase a license to become The Place or The Trainer, and you can order — individually or in larger quantities — coffee evaluations carried out using The Ranking Method.
The website also reminds visitors about our blog Red Ink Coffee and about the community space at endeavour.thebettercoffee.org. You can join that network in just a few minutes. Instructions are available on the site, and the space itself is free to access.
We maintain the website in simple, restrained colors with high text contrast. We avoid decorative elements such as stock photos or unnecessary animations.
It is simple, responsive, and — we hope — comfortable to use.
